When in doubt, show your work!

Every student has faced the dreaded Math Problem that they have absolutely no clue how to solve.  It is really easy to leave the problem blank (you think you are going to get it wrong anyway) but think again!  It is an excellent idea to attempt to solve the problem and list out the steps of your attempt.  There are 3 very important reasons to follow this advice:

     1.  Even if you do not get the entire problem correct, you may get partial credit for understanding at least one step of the answer.

     2.  Your teacher can help you better if he or she can see what part of the problem is specifically giving you trouble.  A blank answer tells them nothing and it may lead them to believe that you are just being lazy.

     3. You may not be as clueless as you think.  Once you get started solving the problem, you may find that you actually do know what you are doing!

I strongly recommend that you look at each problem you are given as a challenge you are ready and able to face.  You may be pleasantly surprised with the results!

 Parent's Corner

Purchase a small white board and some dry erase markers to make homework a little less messy and maybe even a little fun!  White boards can be found at office supply stores, teacher stores, or even at your local retailer.  Get some quality dry erase markers but don't waste the money on a special eraser, a dry wash cloth or sock will do the trick.

With these helpful supplies, you and your student can work out problems without creating a messy homework paper complete with the dreaded eraser holes.  Work problems on the white board, then when the student gets it correct, he or she can transfer the work to the paper that will be turned in to the teacher.

I DECLARE WAR!

Don't forget about WAR.  Yes, the old card game WAR is an excellent way for young Math students to work on comparing whole numbers.  Use a regular deck of cards.  Remove the face cards and the aces for young children.  Let the child deal the cards.  Remember, in WAR you deal the cards until they are all gone.  Each player puts down a card.  The player with the highest number gets to keep the cards.  Continue play until one player runs out of cards.  The winner is of course the person that still has cards remaining.
